How I Found a Successful Niche to Write

When I first started writing here I didn’t know much about writing. As I remember the last time I wrote an essay was on the school way back in 2015.

But somehow I had my interest in writing remained unchanged even if my paths crossed with time.

Two months ago, I started writing here with the ambition to give it a fair try and not close this chapter prematurely.

As I mentioned earlier, I had not even a clue what to write. I just wanted to jot down anything that came to my mind but was afraid of rejection. How I overcame that challenge is another story that went viral some time ago. You can read it here.

Or if you are someone who still struggling to choose a name for your new blog, you can find it here.

With time I learned.

We don’t have to stay in the same place. Right! I had an ambition. I need to pursue it.

After writing around 30-40 articles, I realized that some of my stories were performing well, while others did not receive as many views despite my efforts.

My recent stats.

That was the point where I spoke to myself.

“What if I stop writing about everything and focus on one or two things? “

About those that gave me goosebumps when I checked my stats.

Fortunately, both I and my mind agreed on that thing. So, I started writing about Personal Development and Technology.

What do you need to do?

It’s not something you have to think about for weeks. If you are a seasoned writer you don’t even click this article to read. You know how to do these things better than me!

Write without a niche at first.

So, as a noob or as we say, a beginner to writing, avoid thinking too much about a niche to write at first. Just write everything that comes to your mind.

Don’t worry about whether it’s grammatically correct or not, or whether your writing is appropriate. You can always fix that later. Just keep writing and posting.

If you can’t think of a topic, just use some sources to find one, like what I have personally curated here for you about how to find a topic.

What if you have some idea about a niche or two:🤔

If you have some idea about what you want to write but are having difficulty narrowing it down, my advice is to take your time. Don’t rush.

You are unlikely to experience a sudden surge in views overnight unless you have been selected by some god.

Since you have some ideas, keep writing on those topics until you have an archive of 20+ stories. And then head over to the next section.

When you’re writing the 21st story:

Alright. If you did what I said, It’s time to do some analyzing. And things could look like this.

  1. Now you have published at least 20 stories on the platform.
  2. Some stories have a little bit more read count than others.
  3. The majority have nothing like you are not meant to write.

And your stats could be something like this. (Don’t think about the numbers and the graph could be anything, but you can see some growth.)

You definitely will see a growth.

But worry not. You have done it right. Even though this looks like nothing, you have stepped your foot on the right track. I remember this quote,

“All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better” — Ralph Waldo Emerson.

✍ It’s time to select your niche.

Now you have done the basics, you have an idea of how your stories work, and what your audience loves to read. You have seen the stats. They have told you a lesson. And finally, it’s time to choose your niche.

Choose the first two.

During the initial few months of writing, it is all about experimenting to determine which ones perform the best.

Once you have identified your top-performing articles, select a niche that aligns with those topics. For instance, my niche is “Personal Development and Technology.”

Focusing on a specific niche will help you to establish a clear voice and build your authority in that area. The more you add to it, the more you gain trust.

Consistently practicing small disciplines every day leads to great achievement over time.

With this change, you will see a positive change in your engagement. The graphs will go higher and you will see more $ flowing towards you.

But, Remember! It doesn’t happen overnight.

No one becomes successful overnight. Writing consistently is necessary for progress.

  1. If something is not working, change it and start again.
  2. Follow the best practices in writing.
  3. Master the Medium algorithm bit by bit.

Final advice from Top writers(not me😄, but you can make me.)

The only way to keep progressing is by learning. I always read stories of successful writers to understand their strategies and learn from their failures.

One writer said, “Don’t limit yourself to a niche. Doing so will limit your potential.” In essence, he was saying that if we confine ourselves to a specific area, we will restrict our possibilities of growing beyond.

But, that’s his idea. We are not in a position yet to challenge it or go with it. So, keep this idea in your mind for now, and keep writing with your newly founded niche.

That’s it guys. Keep practicing what I said every day. Finding your niche is not something rock-hard. Keep writing every day, join some publications, and you will see the results in no time.
