Do you know what the Cynefin framework is?🤔Let’s see what it is.
The first thing you need to know is, this doesn’t sound like “Sinefin” or “Sainefin”. It is pronounced “Kunefin” (Ku-nef-en). It’s a Welsh word.
The Cynefin framework is a conceptual framework used to help decision-making, which is very important in project management. It is a method that helps leaders and managers understand the context in which they operate and understand the complexities of problems. It was developed by Dave J. Snowden in 1999 and can be classified into five parts. Let’s see what those five parts are with examples. 📚
📌 1. Clear (simple)
This section includes clear problems, cause and effect relationships that can be easily recognized by everyone. Because the solutions to these are simple, we call this Best Practice.
There are three steps to this.
🎲 Sense: Recognition of facts.
🎲 Categorize: Determining the nature of the problem.
🎲 Respond: Applying established solutions.
💡 Take inventory management in a typical grocery store for example.
📌 2. Complicated
This applies to situations that require analysis or expertise. There may be several correct answers to this and often it may require experts or thorough analysis to find the correct answer. This part is the Good Practice.
The steps here are,
🎲 Sense: Collecting data and analyzing it.
🎲 Analyze: Using expert knowledge or research.
🎲 Respond: Implementing the solution.
💡 For example, you can diagnose car problems that require an experienced mechanic.
📌 3. Complex
This applies to situations where the relationship between the cause and effect of the problem can be understood only by doing a survey or review of past events or periods that cannot be predicted in advance.
Here are the parts:
🎲 Probe: Conducting probes to gather information.
🎲 Sense: Analyzing results.
🎲 Respond: Adapt based on feedback.
💡 An example might be identifying the development of a new product in an innovative technology industry where customer preferences and market conditions are unpredictable.
📌 4. Chaos
This is a chaotic and unpredictable situation where there is no clear relationship between cause and effect. The primary goal here should be to understand the orderly pattern.
For this,
🎲 Act: Taking immediate action to establish the order.
🎲 Sense: Recognizing and assessing the impact of action.
🎲 Respond: Adapt the situation further and address it.
can get
💡 An example can be crisis management during a natural disaster that requires immediate decisive action to prevent damage.
📌 5. Disorder
This section applies to situations where there is no clarity about the nature of the unclassified problem. This is due to confusion or lack of agreement on how to categorize and approach the problem. For this, the situation needs to be broken down into parts and assigned to each of the four parts mentioned earlier to understand and address it correctly.
👨💻The Cynefin framework helps leaders and managers to identify situations, make better decisions, and use the appropriate management style or problem-solving method based on the nature of the challenge they face.
❤️ So I think about the Cynefin framework to have a rough idea. As I said, if there is any mistake or deficiency, please correct it. Let’s do this kind of work.
