Many new website owners neglect the power of an email list. That ignorance leads them to a huge negative impact on Google ranking and SEO.

It will not happen to you. Because you had the thought of using it — but you don’t know how to do it yet.

So, let’s start from level 0.

What is an email list?

An email list is a collection of email addresses. It’s that simple.

What do you use an email list for?

Email lists are used by businesses and individuals to send,

  • Email messages
  • Newsletters
  • Updates
  • Promotional material

to a specific group of people who have opted in to receive those communications. We called such people “Subscribers”.

What are the benefits of using an email list?

You will get many advantages of using an email list for your website or blog.

A well-built email list can help businesses and individuals to:

  1. Reach a large group of interested people with a single click.
  2. Target specific groups of people based on their interests, behavior, and demographics.
  3. Increase website traffic significantly
  4. High & positive chance of sales
  5. Deliver personalized and relevant messages to subscribers

In this illustration, you can see, that your email list is built upon like-minded people. Hence, they have more weight in delivering high engagement.

How to grow an Email list

There are several ways you can build an email list for your brand. Today, I will tell you about 3 best techniques.

Remember
No one will bother to fill your email list unless they are convinced to do so.

Yup. People will not spend their time filling a forum to be a subscriber of your brand just because they read your stuff.

You have to convince them to do that.

#1 Give them something valuable in return.

It’s not like the older days on the internet. Now more people are aware of the new technology.

They don’t like piling up hundreds of junk emails in their inbox

(Even you and I don’t like that either).

So, you have to give them something value in return for their subscription. It can be

  • Something related to your niche
  • A trial version of a product
  • A discount, coupon, or anything you think fit
This is what Good Writer does.

For me, I give my audience an opportunity to make their website look beautiful

To get that service for free, they just have to fill out a small form.

Why this technique is good?

The reason why this will work well is you are giving your audience something very valuable for them. Something they can’t get from any other place.

It is not collecting a random number of emails should be your target.

Because they can always unsubscribe at any time, or they can ignore your emails without even bothering to open them.

Your target should be, making a loyal audience around you. Once they become loyal, they will return — and there is nothing more valuable than a returning customer.

#2 Use smaller sign-up forms

It is not a lie if someone said you need to embed newsletter sign-up forms throughout your website.

That’s something very important to do, to grow up an email list.

For maximum engagement, these forms should be placed on high-traffic pages such as the homepage, blog, and contact page.

However, following these methods without understanding the intention of the audience could result in little or no engagement at all — even penalizing your website as a scam.

What should I do then?

  • Use simple and smaller forms with a maximum of 3 input fields.
  • People do not like to fill out long forms. They will get demotivated and leave it.

Let me give you an example from Good Writer.

This is what I have used in my landing page which has the highest amount of organic traffic.

I just used one input for it with the promise of getting something valuable for them in return.

Since it is only one input, no one feels not to fill out it.

Why do I use only one input here?

The reason is quite simple. Since this is the home page and the intention of having an input field is

  • Just to collect emails
  • Giving resources in return

The audience will feel discouraged to fill out a longer form. They are just trying it with the feeling that something will come to their inbox — but exactly without having an idea about what.

So, they will think it will be a waste of time filling out a long form field.

#2 Using a longer sign-up form

This is what I have embedded in the Write for Us page, which anyone can join and submit their articles as a writer.

Since it needs a little more information than just taking an email, I used 3 inputs on it.

In this scenario,

  • The audience has a specific goal to achieve
  • They have a clear idea about what will be the output

So, a longer form can be used here without affecting the engagement.

But keep in mind, don’t make it too lengthy unless you are the only person who provides that service in this entire world.

Otherwise, they will leave you for a much easier alternative.

Do you know?
People will feel insecure filling out a long input field since they have to give their personal details on it.

The longer the form, the lesser the chance they will fill it out (Unless you are a very reputed brand by now).

#3 Use exit-intent pop-ups

The third technique is using an exit-intent pop-up.

Exit-intent pop-ups appear when a user is about to leave your website, offering them a last chance to subscribe to your email list.

The offer should be attractive, such as a discount code, free guide, or a supply of service as I have done in my blog,

The aim is to persuade them to leave their email address before they exit.

How exit intent popups increase website conversions

  • Provides one last chance to convert visitors
  • Increases email subscriptions
  • Boosts more session time on your domain

Conclusion

I don’t have to say how important is, growing an email list is very important for a blogger or a website owner. It is one of the mandatory things that should be owned at all costs.

Although there are lots of ways to start building one, these 3 techniques have been proving a lot of potential and results than other techniques.
