There are a lot of free blogging platforms out there you can create your own blog at no cost.

  • WordPress
  • Blogger
  • Wix

are a few options you can see in the market.

But they are coming with lots of restrictions when it comes to earning money.

Because their intention is not to earn you money but to earn for themselves.

With my experience as a blogger — I did start as a free blogger and now with a domain that I own — here are 21 reasons why you should not start with a free platform.

Note:
Buying a domain with hosting is not very pricy thing now. I use a premium hosting comes with a “.com” domain which only cost me $60.

How to Register Your Blog on a Domain (Fast, Secure, & Affordable)

#1 Free Platforms Limit Monetization Options:

“If something is free, you’re the product.” Have you ever heard that?

The purpose of free blogging platforms is not to give you the best chance to earn. Their sole purpose is to use you as a tool to earn for themselves.

So, They are only giving a limited number of options when it comes to monetizing your blog. Furthermore, some platforms even require a paid membership or a cut from your earnings.

Why do that right? It’s your talent they are taking free of charge.

It is not very expensive to create your own blog. I only spend ~$57 to start this blog.

#2 They control the ads over you

Many free platforms place their advertisements on your blog and earn from the traffic your blog gets

They will get easy money from your hard work.

What’s even worse is, that you might not have any control over the type, placement, or revenue share of these ads.

Even if you can monetize through ads on a free platform, the revenue share might be much lower compared to a self-hosted blog.

#3 You don’t have the authority over the domain

Another downside of using a free blogging platform is, that you don’t have the ownership of your domain name.

You are just using a subdomain under their domain name (eg. yourblog.wordpress.com).

As a result, you will never get the authority over the domain name. Your blog will never get website authority scores and other related domain rankings.

Furthermore, a blog with a domain name that includes the platform’s branding can look less professional to potential advertisers or sponsors.

#4 You don’t own your own blog

Yes. One major drawback of using a free blogging platform is that you don’t fully own your content or the site itself.

This means you have limited freedom to do whatever you like with your blog.

These platforms often have strict policies and restrictions that can significantly limit your creative control.

For example, I was banned from both Medium and Substack for allegedly violating their policies.

This experience highlights the risk of relying on platforms that can shut down your blog or change its rules at any time, potentially affecting your content and readership without warning.

#5 Limited design options

A great blog design always attracts more organic traffic.

Search engines like Google consider your site’s design when determining page ranking.

That’s because search engines want to deliver the best possible results to their users. And a site with great UX signals that it’s a quality, trustworthy resource.

However, the downside of a free platform is that you are often limited in terms of design options to make your blog beautiful.

With fewer customization capabilities, your blog may end up looking similar to many others on the same platform.

This lack of uniqueness can decrease your chances of ranking higher on search engine results pages (SERPs).

#6 Difficulty with SEO

Using a free site will make it very difficult for you to promote it

As you only use one of their subdomains, it does not appear professional and may not carry as much SEO weight — making it harder to rank in search engines like Google.

On the other hand, free platforms lack great SEO techniques or otherwise they are just not giving you the opportunity

As example:

WordPress.com (Free Version):

On the free version of WordPress.com, you cannot install third-party plugins, including popular SEO plugins like Yoast SEO or All in One SEO Pack.

These plugins provide advanced SEO features, such as XML sitemaps, meta tags, keyword optimization, and more, which are crucial for improving search engine rankings.

Blogger:

While Blogger is easy to use, it provides limited SEO tools and lacks the flexibility to make significant changes to the HTML or add custom scripts.

This can limit your ability to optimize the site fully for search engines.

#7 Limited Storage Space

The Bottom Line

Finally, what I have to say is you don’t want to be an experienced writer or blogger to start your own blog.

They are pure bull shit big companies always telling you.

Just start one. It is not too expensive. You will start earning from the first day.
