We have lived through different stages of our lives. Some have very pleasant memories while some are not very pleasant to think about. Sometimes listening to a piece of old music kicks those memories back into our lives, making us lost in those memories.
They come all of a sudden. It’s surprising how a music track, even a short piece of it could take us to the exact moment we were listening to that piece. Let me share one story with you.
When I was studying for A/Ls, every Saturday I went to my friend’s home to work. Since I was lazy at studying, working together made me learn something. But as the night passed, with a hot cup of tea in our hands, we had a small chat, listening to a song in the background.
Those times are crazy and hard. The feeling of the need to pass the exam to get into a University comes with really hard feelings. But now, thinking about those times, being at two different universities on two sides of the world! It takes me to a whole different vibe.
Whenever I hear the music we used to listen to, it takes me a trip down that memory lane.
What about you? Are you flying back as I am?
The Science behind it.
I might not be the best explainer for this. But I searched for the reason and found this reasonable explanation.
This experience — when music brings back memories of events, people, and places from our past — is known as a music-evoked autobiographical memory. And it’s a common experience.
When music draws our attention, this increases the likelihood that it will be encoded in memory together with details of a life event. — Dr Kelly Jakubowski
That’s absolutely correct. I even feel the moment as I’m there, drinking that same cup of tea, chattering with my best friend.
Who thought music could do such a thing…
